Rooted in the Gospels: Monday in Matthew (Week 2)

Week 2: When the World Shakes, God Still Leads

From the War Room

Read Matthew 2:1-23 on Bible.com

This week, as I opened Matthew 2, my soul felt the unrest of the world inside the pages—kings scheming, children dying, families fleeing, fear chasing faith. And yet… even in the chaos, something steady was unfolding.

I sat still, holding the text like a map.

Not one with clear highways, but one that whispers, “Follow the star.”
Not one that guarantees safety, but one that promises, “I will be with you.”

The Search for a King

The chapter opens with a question that still echoes today:

“Where is the one who has been born king of the Jews?”
Matthew 2:2 (NIV)

The Magi didn’t know the details. They just followed the light they were given.

They came to worship.
Not explain.
Not control.
Just worship.

And in contrast, Herod heard the same news and trembled—not with reverence, but with rage. The fear of losing power turned him into a murderer. And it still does that today.

When Obedience Means Escape

Joseph, again, says nothing.
But he listens. And he moves.

“An angel of the Lord appeared to Joseph in a dream. ‘Get up,’ he said, ‘take the child and his mother and escape to Egypt.’”
Matthew 2:13 (NIV)

He doesn’t argue. He doesn’t delay.
He just rises in the night, gathers his family, and walks into the unknown.

I wonder what that night smelled like.
I wonder if Mary cried.
I wonder if Joseph ever whispered, “God, are You sure this is the plan?

But still… they went.

God Leads Through Shadows

God doesn’t explain the plan.
He gives pieces. A dream here. A warning there.
But every piece is protection. Every movement is purposeful.

“Out of Egypt I called my son.”
“A voice is heard in Ramah, weeping…”
“He will be called a Nazarene.”

Three ancient prophecies are fulfilled in one chapter—each connected to movement, suffering, and obedience in the dark.

God’s promises are not always wrapped in ease.
Sometimes they’re hidden in the detours.

Reflection for the Week

  • What “Herods” in your life try to steal your peace?
  • Where is God asking you to move—not with full answers, but full trust?
  • Are you willing to listen for His voice in the silence?

Journal Prompt

“Where is God leading me even when I don’t understand the path?”

Write down one area where you’re waiting for clarity—and ask God to speak in dreams, through Scripture, or through wise voices. Then… be still enough to hear.

Closing Prayer

Father, You led the Magi by light and Joseph by dreams. You still lead those who seek You. When the world shakes, teach me to trust. When the path is dark, remind me You are near. Hide me in Your will. Move me with Your Spirit. Let me follow not because I know the way—but because I know You. In Jesus’ name, Amen.
